ABOUT

Our high field NMR and Bio-Analytical Chemistry facility provides fast and bespoke analytical services to support businesses (spin-outs, start-ups, SMEs, large companies), researchers across the Life and Physical Sciences in Universities and Research Institutes, NGOs, government agencies, national and international organizations, including contract research organisations.

The facility includes new and state-of-the-art Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography/Liquid Chromatography coupled Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/LC-MS) equipment. Between 2021 and 2025, Rothamsted Research received significant investment (£4.2M) from BBSRC to upgrade its NMR and Bio-Analytical Chemistry facility. These funds were used to acquire a new 700 MHz NMR system equipped with the UK’s first CPMAS BioSolids Cryoprobe for solid-state analysis of biological systems, supercritical fluid – HPLC-MS for product purity / purification, along with triple quadrupole GC-MS, time-of-flight GC-MS and GC-MS (MSD) for targeted analysis.

The facility offers access to technical and specialist research expertise, and provision of training within the facility, as well as a rich source of specialist knowledge.

For businesses, we cover a range of services to help solve challenges (but not limited to):

  • Problem solving – overcoming technical challenges with product development
  • Impurity analysis – detect, identify and quantify trace impurities in products and materials
  • Quality control – ensuring the quality of products and materials
  • Stability tests – measure properties of products and materials after applying external conditions

  • Agroecosystem Health and Integrated Pest Management inc environmental monitoring
  • Synthetic organic chemistry - intermediates and products
