NATIONAL BIOSCIENCE RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURES

Rothamsted, with strategic funding from BBSRC, hosts three internationally important resources that provide a unique insight on agro-ecosystem functioning. They exist for the benefit of the scientific community in general and are open for use, in terms of both their facilities and the open source datasets they support.

The farm platform

THE NORTH WYKE FARM PLATFORM

This unique experimental facility based in North Wyke, Devon consists of three different ‘mini grassland farms’ (each is about 20ha in size) that were established to conduct research on future grassland farming systems and their associated livestock food chains. State of the art instrumentation and sensor technology enables scientists to measure and model all inputs and outputs coming from a pasture-livestock system.

The Insect Survey

THE INSECT SURVEY

The Rothamsted Insect Survey comprises two national trap networks that provide the most extensive long-term standardised data on terrestrial invertebrates in the world.

The Long Term Experiments

THE LONG TERM EXPERIMENTS

Rothamsted hosts the oldest continuous agronomic experiments in the world at its headquarters in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Seven of the original experiments continue today providing invaluable data for scientists across the globe.
