About

From science-fiction films where fungi threaten humanity with extinction, to their use as sustainable alternatives to meat and innovative biomaterials for construction, fungi play a remarkable role in our lives. They are responsible for important diseases affecting both humans and crops, yet they are also essential to many of the foods and drinks we enjoy. In this Café Scientifique talk, Dr Martin Darino from Rothamsted Research will explore how fungi have shaped our planet, for better and for worse, since their emergence around 1.5 billion years ago. We will also discuss how fungi could help us tackle some of the major challenges facing our society today.

Café Scientifique is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context. Anyone is welcome to come and learn something new, ask questions, and join in the discussion.
