Advice from a sound base

Rothamsted Research has a profound understanding of biological processes and extensive knowledge of whole agricultural systems. Our scientists draw on both to contribute evidence and recommendations that inform policy-making in the UK and overseas.

SUPPORTING POLICY DEVELOPMENT

We contribute to national and international policies by submitting written and oral evidence to government consultations, parliamentary open debates and governmental inquiries, through invited participation in scientific strategy and governmental review panels, provision of robust, peer-reviewed data and text for policy and strategy documents and through the participation of our scientists in government or research council missions and policy workshops.

Examples of how we have helped shape policy include our contributions to the Dasgupta Review of the Economimcs of Biodiversity, consultation with the EFRA parliamentary committee on soil health and representation on the expert working group for national small stream water quality monitoring as part of the 25 year environmental plan. We have also contributed to ammonia emissions reduciton policy for the Northern Ireland Government and worked in Devon on the county's net zero plan.

Our scientists have also contributed to several policy briefings produced by the Parliamentary Office of Scince and Technology nad regularly give evidence to parliamentary committee meetings.

The historic Rothasmted sites frequently host policymakers for fact-finding visits, including UK governement ministers and MPs and ministers and civil servants from numerous international partner countries.
