The big picture: using wildflower strips for pest control
Farming Footprints and Adaptations
Simón is a postdoctoral researcher at the North Wyke site where his work focuses on reducing the environmental footprint of livestock systems without compromising productivity. Trained as a veterinarian at the University of Caldas, Colombia, he went on to work with CIPAV, a leading Colombian research centre specialising in sustainable food production systems, before completing a PhD in Animal Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
His current research sits at the intersection of grazing management, enteric methane emissions, and climate-smart farming. At North Wyke, he works with long-term experimental data to understand how management and diet influence greenhouse gas outputs from beef cattle. He has particular expertise in silvopastoral systems and the use of non-conventional feed resources as tools for improving animal nutrition and mitigating the environmental impact of ruminant production systems.
Outside of research, Simon is hobbyist photographer and astronomer who finds as much wonder in a clear Devon night sky as in a well-composed shot.
