The big picture: using wildflower strips for pest control
Damon earned his PhD in Molecular Toxicology from the University of Leicester (MRC Toxicology Unit) in 2000. His early research as a Chemical Pathology Associate at Leicester University sparked a lasting interest in oxidative stress. He later advanced to Senior Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen in the Department of Immunity, Inflammation and Infection, before transitioning into contract research within the agrochemical industry.
Over the course of his career, Damon has published in peer reviewed journals and secured competitive grant funding across diverse topics, with a particular focus on inflammatory and immune responses and the role of targeted antioxidants. He has taught extensively across BSc, MSc, and MBChB programmes, and collaborated with national and international partners, including industry. Damon has served as a reviewer for several basic science journals and grant awarding bodies.
At Rothamsted, Damon serves as Head of Research Grants within the Finance Office. He leads and manages the support service for planning, developing, and delivering externally funded research activities. With specialist expertise in identifying and costing research funding, Damon provides both strategic and practical advice to Rothamsted’s researchers, ensuring the effective development of competitive grant applications.
