About

In 2023, the UK Government introduced the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act. More recently, the accompanying Regulations came into force in November 2025. Together, they establish a framework that supports the development and use of precision-bred plants in England – opening new opportunities for next-generation gene-edited crops.

But what exactly is a gene-edited plant? How does it differ from a genetically modified plant? And how does it compare to conventional plant breeding? (Spoiler: in many cases, the genetic changes from gene editing look remarkably similar to those produced naturally or through traditional breeding.)

Join Dr Mollie Langdon from Rothamsted Research for an accessible introduction to precision breeding technologies (including CRISPR and other gene editing tools). Discover the gene-editing projects underway at Rothamsted, and learn how the new legislation aims to accelerate sustainable, resilient, and efficient agricultural and food production systems in England.

Café Scientifique is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context. Anyone is welcome to come and learn something new, ask questions, and join in the discussion.
