About

Chironomids, or non-biting midges, are abundant and species-rich in freshwater habitats. Because many of the species have precise ecological requirements, they are excellent indicators of environmental change. In this talk Steve Brooks will describe the research he did at the Natural History Museum, London, to develop a ‘midge thermometer’ to reconstruct past climates and provide insights into the drivers and pace of climate change, and to validate climate models. He will also discuss how midges have been used to investigate the causes of fluctuations in bird populations and the environmental impacts of heavy metal pollution.
