STUDENTSHIP DETAIL

A PhD studentship is available to identify and characterise new genes controlling the content of dietary fibre (arabinoxylan) in wheat flour. Novel QTLs will initially be identified by biochemical analysis of white flour from populations made from crosses between wheat land races and a modern spring wheat variety, using high density marker arrays for mapping.  This mapping, together with available Exome capture data on the lines, will facilitate the in silico identification of putative candidate genes which will be tested using TILLING and transcriptomics.  The project will provide training in modern plant genetics and biochemistry with co-supervision in wheat genetics provided by Prof Simon Griffiths at the John Innes Centre, with the student being registered at the University of East Anglia.

Applicants should hold a minimum of a UK Honours Degree at 2:1 level or equivalent in appropriate subjects. Project open to applications from UK and EU nationals only.

Eligable students will be supported by the tax-free stipend (£14,777 in 2018/19), for 4 years. In addition, for eligible students, the award will cover fees for EU/UK nationals and a Research and Training Grant to fund their research, conference attendance and networking.

To apply for this project, please complete our Rothamsted PhD Application Formwhich can be found in the downloads section to the left of this page.

All applications should be sent to Donna Fellowes; rres.graduate-studies@rothamsted.ac.uk as soon as possible, and should include a fully completed application form, CV, a transcript of module marks and two references. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

The reference form which will need to be completed by your referees can also be found on the downloads section to the left of this page. These references should be sent directly from the referees to Donna Fellowes; rres.graduate-studies@rothamsted.ac.uk as soon as possible.
