GENDER PAY GAP DETAILED
Pay differences between women and men at Rothamsted Research are well below national levels; the disparity reflects the fact that fewer women hold senior roles, latest data show.
Gender pay gap data from Rothamsted Research, published online today, show that the disparity between the median (or middle level) salaries paid to women and men working at the institute is 5.8% in favour of men, a ratio that is more than 12 points below the national level of 18.4%.
The mean (or average) difference in salaries is 14% in favour of men, and the differences in bonus pay are 38.5% (median) and 29% (average), both in favour of men. The ratios reflect the significantly higher proportion of males in senior roles at the institute.
The figures are a snapshot of the institute’s pay profile on 5 April 2017, as required by the Equality Act 2010 (Gender Pay Gap Information) Regulations 2017. Employers with 250 staff or more must make their gender pay gap data public.
Nearly 450 people work at Rothamsted of whom 54% identify as male and 46% as female. Gender ratios in the quartile paybands are most marked in the Upper band, which is 74% male; the Upper Middle is 48% male; the Lower Middle is 50% male; and the Lower is 45% male.
“Median pay figures are generally less skewed by extremes than mean figures and show, for Rothamsted, that our gender pay gap compares well against other research bodies,” says Stephen Laidler, the institute's Head of Human Resources. “But we are not satisfied and continue to implement measures that end gender differences.”

This is the only way that we can truly maximise the potential that we offer.”
Rothamsted has held Athena SWAN Bronze accreditation since 2014 in recognition of its promotion of gender equality throughout the organisation, and has applied for Silver accreditation under new criteria, introduced in 2015, that recognise gender equality more broadly.
Legislation introduced in April 2017 requires employers with 250 staff or more to publish their gender pay gap data annually. The data for 2017 needs to be published on both government and employer websites by 30 March for public sector organisations and by 4 April for those, like Rothamsted, in the private and voluntary sectors.

The Lawes Agricultural Trust, established in 1889 by Sir John Bennet Lawes, supports Rothamsted Research’s national and international agricultural science through the provision of land, facilities and funding. LAT, a charitable trust, owns the estates at Harpenden and Broom's Barn, including many of the buildings used by Rothamsted Research. LAT provides an annual research grant to the Director, accommodation for nearly 200 people, and support for fellowships for young scientists from developing countries. LAT also makes capital grants to help modernise facilities at Rothamsted, or invests in new buildings.
