Using NMR and MS techniques, MeT-RO delivers a high throughput plant metabolomics facility that supports RRes research projects and is accessible to internal and external users.


Metabolomics is concerned with the measurement of all low molecular weight metabolites in a given sample, cell or tissue and the integration of the resulting data in a biological context.

Facilities available include a modern suite of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy (MS) laboratories, staffed by experienced spectroscopists, with access to resources in analytical chemistry and plant growth. Instrumentation that is currently available includes two Bruker NMR spectrometers (400 MHz and 600MHz), a Bruker Daltonics Esquire 3000 ion trap mass spectrometer, a high resolution Thermo LTQ Orbitrap elite LC-MS system and a range of GC-MS instrumentation including an Agilent MSD GC-MS spectrometer.

Current approaches include triple metabolite fingerprinting by NMR-MS and the use of advanced multivariate statistics to discern discriminatory metabolites. Quantitative targeted analyses are available for selected metabolite classes.

The facility collects around 25,000 datasets per year across a range of diverse plant tissues. Sample preparation is carried out by experienced analysts according to a range of Standard Operating Procedures. Facilities for raw tissue handling and processing are also available and include large scale freeze-driers, milling and weighing.
