Rothamsted Research's bioimaging facility provides equipment and training dedicated to facilitate cutting-edge science through the provision of up to date and advanced imaging equipment and expertise in the life sciences. Our facility is open to all investigators, internal research staff, collaborators and external clients. Our team has specialist expertise and we provide access, training and a fully managed service as required.
Our team led by Dr Smita Kurup (Dr Eudri Venter, Ms Kirstie Halsey, Ms Hannah Walpole) has specialist expertise in microscopy as well as a sound understanding of cell biology. This knowledge base allows us to provide training and guidance throughout your project, from determining the best equipment to use to the logistics around imaging your samples themselves.
We provide light, fluorescence, and electron microscopy services. Our equipment includes 2 JEOL scanning electron microscopes, a JEOL JEM 2011Transmission electron microscope, a Zeiss LSM 780 laser confocal microscope along with several fluorescence and light stereo and upright microscopes. In addition, we have a Leica HPM100 high pressure freezer for sample preparation along with traditional sample preparation and sectioning equipment. Our electron microscopes have GATAN cryo-preparation systems necessary for the observation of biological specimens. In addition, these microscopes also allow Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) for elemental analysis. Please scroll down further for a more detailed description of our equipment and capabilities.
If you are an external client, we are very willing to discuss any bioimaging requirements that you may have. We routinely work with external clients; universities, institutes and companies on a collaborative or full service basis nationally and internationally.
BOOKING THE FACILITY
We will train you if you are going to use our facility.
If you would like to use bioimaging in your research, please come and see us or send us an email (firstname.lastname@example.org). In the first instance we need you to fill in a user registration form. If you are an experienced staff user, please click booking to access our booking calendar.
We always familiarize new users on our instruments. Once you’ve had an initial training you will have access to the booking calendar. Even after the initial training, we are always around to provide any additional help, troubleshooting or advice.
You are always welcome to come to Bioimaging and see our facility and equipment. Periodically we give tours, and we would be delighted if you could join these as we can give you more information on imaging methods that might help your research.
