TOM's STORY

During the lead up to A-levels I had lost my motivation as I had no real interest as to what to do next. Thankfully, my Biology teacher pointed me towards an apprenticeship at Rothamsted. I applied because I was unsure of what else to do after receiving my A-levels, as they weren’t what I had hoped for. Thankfully I was offered the position of Apprentice Lab Technician and its given me the confidence and knowledge to advance.

I learned techniques in Chemistry and Biochemistry, learning how to operate several machines and becoming a member of a close-knit friendly team, playing a vital supporting role to post-doctoral scientists, principal investigators and fellow technicians. I learned how to interpret data and troubleshoot machines, as well as develop new methodologies and answer questions from researchers. With the samples I processed I often got an insight into the projects they were for, and what that contemporary and exciting research was seeking to explore. This helped me form a mental map of how everything that happened at North Wyke tied together to help make livestock farming a lot more sustainable.

It’s been two years of very valuable work experience, and I’ve also received an HND and Apprenticeship qualification in that time.

Thanks to Rothamsted’s apprenticeship scheme, I’m confident and ambitiously looking toward my next step.
