Park Grass is a grass experiment established over 150 years ago by Sir John Lawes. He set up several experiments to find out how crops grow, and if they needed fertilizer to help them grow better. It is divided up into plots given different fertilizers. Some of these fertilizers make the soil very acid and will cause an effect on the plants that grow here. These plants have not been added by us, they are the wild plants that grow in this soil. They include lots of different types of grass, also clovers and other types of flowering plants that you might find in hedges or in your garden – daisy, buttercup, dock, etc. Over 40 different types of plant are found in some plots, only 3 or 4 in others. Most plants don't like acid soils, so the more acid the soil, the fewer plants will grow there.
