Many of the mosquitoes that bite humans spread diseases and one of the most serious is Malaria. There are at least 300 million cases of malaria each year and more than a million deaths (mostly children). One of the best ways of controlling the mosquitoes and therefore reducing malaria is by using insecticides. Unfortunately because insecticides have been used a lot of the mosquitoes have evolved and become resistant. Chris' work is to develop ways to test the mosquitoes to see if 1) they are the species that bite humans 2) they have the malaria parasite inside them and 3) if they are resistant to any insecticides.
