Challney-Rothamsted Science at Work

The Challney High School for Girls is a Science Specialist School. The school is defined and inspired by principles of Respect, Opportunity and Achievement. The school aims to provide high quality education for over 900 girls age 11-16. Based in Luton, the school reflects the rich diversity of the town. The multi-ethnic, multi-faith, multi-lingual backgrounds of the students make this a vibrant and exciting learning environment.

Encouraging scientific debate: comics written and reviewed by young learners

This project aimed to introduce the concept of peer review to secondary school students. The project involved 35 Key Stage 4 (Ages 14-16 year old) students and 2 teachers from 2 community girls schools in the UK (The Challney High School for Girls in Luton and The Clapton Girls Technology College in Hackney). Both schools have circa 900 students with a large number of girls from minority ethnic backgrounds and with a high proportion of girls speaking English as an additional language.

This project was funded by the BBSRC Public Engagement Awards 2009.

This project was funded by NESTA (National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts) from 2006 to 2008 and aimed to make available a state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope (SEM) located in Rothamsted's Bioimaging Unit to post-16 school science groups to use, in real time, via a remote link from their own school labs. Remote link was successful on several occasions linking Rothamsted microscopes to other organizations such as the Royal Society. However, despite several attempts, internet links with schools were not possible due to institutional firewalls on both sides. We are exploring ways to overcome this technical issue.
