Research interests

Genetics of plant-pathogen interactions in oilseed brassicas (rapeseed-mustard), pathogenic variability of populations of oilseed brassicas pathogens, characterisation of differential sources of host resistance capable of discriminating pathotypes of fungal pathogens, genetic analysis of the inheritance of resistance, host response in relation to the interaction between pathogens, breeding for disease resistance (white rust, downy mildew and dark leaf & pod spot) and farmers’ participatory plant breeding/variety selection in India (please see international cooperation section below).

India grows the largest area of oilseeds in the world, but still has to import large quantities of edible oils to meet its national demand. During 2002-03, 5.11 million tonnes (49.3% of national consumption) were imported, valued at ca £1.57 billion (£1=Indian Rs70), making India the world's largest importer of vegetable oils. Experts forecast that this demand will increase, as diet surveys by the Indian National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau in 10 States show that daily visible fat/oil intake ranges from 1-7 kg person^-1 year^-1 in rural India. This is far below the prescribed minimum nutritional norm of 14 kg person^-1 year^-1.
