The main aims were to investigate the mechanism of virus transmission, the epidemiology and control of the diseases, the variability in the virus genomes and the biology and ecology of the vector (traditionally regarded as a fungus but now often classified as a protist). This work was funded by BBSRC, DEFRA, H-GCA and the EU. The members of the team were:
In collaboration with Dr John Antoniw, and arising from our work on the AAB Descriptions of Plant Viruses, a comprehensive sequence database for plant (and some other) viruses has been created and software is being developed to exploit this resource. Full details of the CD-ROM marketed by AAB and the related web resources can be found on the DPV Web pages. I also act as advisor on plant viruses to the NCBI RefSeq project and am the Plant virus Subcommittee Chair for the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). This work is continuing despite my retirement.
This work is part of a very productive collaboration with Prof Dr Chen Jianping and colleagues at the Zhejang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Hangzhou, People's Republic of China. Molecular and biological characterisation and phylogenetic analyses are identifying viruses of many crops in China, particularly those from the genera Potyvirus and Carlavirus. A full list of our joint publications can be found on a separate page.
| The barley mosaic viruses are usually first noticed in the winter or early spring as yellow patches in the crop. This field had a mixture of both Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) and Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV). | ![]() |
| The typical mosaic symptoms on the younger leaves are shown in this picture. | ![]() |
| Barley mosaic viruses can be effectively controlled using resistant varieties as this photograph from a BaYMV trial in Gloucestershire, UK, shows dramatically. | ![]() |
| Composite aerial photograph of the same trial taken by Dr Vick Jordan using a model aeroplane. | ![]() |
| By flowering, symptoms of the mosaic viruses are usually difficult to find but crops can remain stunted as this picture illustrates. Severe infection by the mosaic viruses can result in yield losses of 30% or more. | ![]() |

DPV Web
This site contains a virtually complete on-line version of the DPV program and much more. In addition to the individual virus descriptions, there is extensive taxonomic coverage (all viruses except those with a double-stranded DNA genome), classified lists of plant virus sequences and a new sequence database and software for rapid access to viral gene sequences and subsequent analyses. Details of the stand-alone CD-ROM version marketed by AAB can also be found on this site.
