July 2011

*** Changes for the better for the charging of FEC rates for the new ISPGs in the 2011/2012 financial year. Please see the Costs page for details.

June 2011

Confocal installation and training
The new Zeiss 780 laser scanning microscope will arrive and be installed from 6-8th July 2011. An introductory talk will be given on Monday 11th July by the Zeiss representative. Following this, there will be a number of small group training sessions. Please contact Bioimaging if you would like to attend one of these training sessions.

Bioimaging confocal open discussion meeting 2
Wednesday 25th May 10.30 am in the Yates Suite.  All welcome, coffee provided.
The new confocal laser scanning microscope has been ordered and is expected at the end of June.  This meeting is designed to introduce the new confocal to users and have people discuss any projects they may already have planned in order to maximise use of the new instrument as soon as it arrives.  Alternatively, please contact Allison if you are interested in learning more.

Imaging Forum
Wednesday 25th May 11.00 am in the Yates Suite. All welcome, coffee provided.
Microscopy and Bioimaging techniques are useful for many projects on site.  Rothamsted Bioimaging has a number of sophisticated instruments along with the staff expertise for undertaking a range of projects.  This forum is the first of a series of bimonthly informal sessions where people who are interested in using Rothamsted Bioimaging or microscopy techniques can discuss imaging with staff and other interested users. There will also be a short presentation covering techniques, journal articles etc.

This month Allison will be presenting on the International Botanical Microscopy Meeting that she attended in April in Wageningen. Topics covered included trafficking and the endomembrane system, the cytoskeleton, cell walls, signalling, the nucleus and organelles and pathogens and unicellular organisms.

April 2011

Instrument relocations 3rd-6th May

The arrival of the new confocal microscope requires relocation of some microscopes in Bioimaging. The new confocal microscope will be placed in room 008 where the current confocal microscope, the inverted microscope and the M205 stereomicroscope are located.

The Zeiss 780 LSM will be placed where the Leica M205 stereomicroscope currently sits. The stereomicroscope will be moved to room 018 (Axiophot room) on the left as you walk in and the PALM laser capture microscope will be moved to room 008 (confocal room) on a spare bench. The current confocal microscope will remain in its present location. The result of the movements will have a room dedicated to the laser microscopes and one for the light microscopes.

March 2011

The new confocal purchase has been approved. The Zeiss 780 laser scanning microscope is expected to be delivered at the end of June. Training will take place shortly afterwards. Start thinking about those fluorescent microscopy experiments to do!!

October 2010

Schools are visiting again on 12th and 14th October in the morning. The instruments have been booked out for this time period. Outside of these times the use of Bioimaging is as per usual.

July 2010

The list of chemicals in Bioimaging has now been added to the Rothamsted Chemicals Database. If you are after odd microscopy stains and dyes, you may find that we already have them in stock.

June 2010

The new Leica DMI 6000 B inverted microscope is up and running. This is an automated widefield microscope for use with samples that require more working distance, such as those in Petri dishes. This microscope is for both brightfield and fluorescence imaging. Please contact Bioimaging staff for training.

The second Bioimaging & Microscopy Workshop was held on 16th June. If you are interested in attending a similar course in the future please contact Human Resources to be put on the waiting list. We will re-run the course in early 2011.
