Spermagonia of Melamspora larici-epitea on the needle of European larch Larix decidua (left).  Spermatia (arrows) are haploid and able to fertilise receptive hyphae of compatible spermagonia (matching mating type). Spermatia and receptive hyphae from the same spermagonium do not fertilise as they belong to the same mating type.
