Often, ecological data, particularly for animals, are collected as counts per grid cell.
The male tupelo tree data, displayed previously on page 1 of this section,
may be converted to counts, yielding the map below.

Given the list of counts observed, we can ask whether their arrangement is random.
Note that by gridding the data with a certain unit size, here 4m x 4m, we have imposed a
particular ‘scale’, so this is a different question than we asked of the mapped data.
In fact, the arrangement of the counts is significantly non-random,
over the 169 contiguous 4m x 4m grid cells.

SADIE was, in fact, developed specifically for ecological count data, and the main version used is SADIE for counts.
