Andrew has worked at Rothamsted since 1994 on the agronomy and physiology of arable crops. Current work is focused on wheat pre-breeding research, studying a diverse range of germplasm looking particularly at improving nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiency. 

In the past work was centred around biomass crops, particularly the grasses Miscanthus sp, switchgrass (P. Virgatum) and reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea).  He has also carried out research on the woody biomass crops willow (Salix sp) and poplar (Populous sp).

Research was centred around the agronomy of biomass crops, including work on nutrient requirements and cycling (N, P and K), water use, Life Cycle Analysis, and pest and disease occurrence. This has included work on above and below ground biomass, and has used labelled nitrogen techniques to study the fate of applied fertilisers.  Research has also been undertaken on the environmental impacts of biomass crops (e.g. nitrate leaching), and contributions have been made in collaborative projects to research on wider environmental issues, e.g. impacts on avifauna, and the social and economic impacts of increasing rural land use for biomass crops. Collaborations on research in crop modelling and land suitability for biomass crops have also been undertaken. Andrew was responsible for managing the Miscanthus mapping population at Rothamsted and the associated phenotyping.  Work extended to collaborating with academics specialising in engineering and fuels, studying the impacts of agronomy on biomass fuel specifications and characteristics.
