Plant Biology & Crop Science
Computational & Systems Biology
I am currently a Curator of the electronic Rothamsted Archive (e-RA) which provides a permanent managed database for secure storage of Rothamsted's long-term experimental data. I am also a Research Scientist on a TSB-funded project to develop an automatic system for monitoring and detecting crop stresses caused by fungal pathogens and insect pests. Previously I have worked on a EU-funded project to investigate splash dispersal of citrus black spot and a Defra-funded project investigating mycotoxin-producing Fusarium species and related pathogenic fungi in wheat. I have a diverse scientific background having worked at Rothamsted Research in plant pathology, weed ecology, herbicide resistance as well as insecticide resistance in projects spanning 30 years. My first degree was in Geography specialising in Soils, I have a PhD in Ecotoxicology & Community Ecology and have also worked as a tutor with the Field Studies Council and Environmental Agency. I have a particular interest in embracing the multidisciplinary nature of agricultural science and in the relation between disease effects across different levels of biological structure from cells to population, to community and field scale. As in my current project, I work at all system levels from microbiology, whole plant and field experiments aiming towards an understanding of the relationships between lab based and real farm scale effects.
Additionally, I have a special interest for sharing the skills & knowledge of Rothamsted Research with scientists from developing countries through my role as International Liaison Officer (2007-2011). A particular highlight was knowledge transfer through the organisation of an international workshop in South Africa to showcase the benefits of Rothamsted International-African Fellowships. In this role I was also responsible for website design, data analysis and database management. I am also interested in the effective communication and visualisation of science to the lay community and school children as well as design of publicity material such as posters and newsletters to enhance the public understanding of science.
