Summary:

Lin Field started her science career by completing a degree (Hons, First Class) with the Open University, whilst working as a Laboratory Technician (1978-1985). She went on to do a PhD, on the molecular basis of insecticide resistance, at Rothamsted Research (1989) and then worked her way through the science Grades at Rothamsted, becoming leader of the ‘Insect Molecular Biology Group’ in 2002 and then Head of the ‘Department of Biological Chemistry’ in 2010 (now ‘Biological Chemistry and Crop Protection’ BCCP). Since 2005 she has also been a Special Professor at the University of Nottingham. Lin is a Fellow of the Institute of Biology (2009-present) and a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society (1999-present) and was the latter’s President from 2008-2010. Lin has published more than 120 peer reviewed papers and has wide experience of being a referee for Journals (including being the UK Editor of Insect Molecular Biology 1999-2010) and for grant-awarding bodies. She is currently a member of BBSRC Research Committee B. Lin has supervised 14 (all successful) PhDs with 6 more in progress and plays an active role in Post-Graduate training at Rothamsted.

 

Lin’s research interests are focussed on understanding insecticide mode of action and resistance at the biochemical/molecular level and then using this to develop better pest control strategies. Her Group use the latest genomic techniques to understand resistance and apply this through links with the agro-chemical industry. More recently she has played a role in developing Rothamsted’s policy on the effect of neonicotinoids on bees and has delivered the views to a wide audience including TV, radio and the press. She is a member of the Defra Pollinators Expert Advisory Group. In her role as Head of BCCP she has developed a wide knowledge of alternative pest control strategies and has been an advocate of the use of a wide range of techniques including GM technologies to deliver new crop protection, at a time when the need to  deliver increasing crop yields has never been greater.
