Summary:

Richard Harrington is Head of the Rothamsted Insect Survey, which is funded primarily by the BBSRC as a “National Capability”. He has a PhD from Imperial College, the work on aphids being done at the Natural History Museum. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society in 1977. He came to Rothamsted in 1979 and has worked with the Rothamsted Insect Survey ever since, leading the management of the suction trap network and its associated science since 1993. His research interests include aphid biology and ecology, and assessment of the potential impacts of environmental changes on insect (especially but not exclusively aphid) dynamics and diversity. He was co-ordinator of the EU project EXAMINE, which has brought together aphid data from suction traps throughout Europe onto a single database. He is co-editor (with Professor Helmut van Emden) of the book `Aphids as Crop Pests’ published by CABI. Although aphids are his bread and butter, he has had a life-long interest in butterflies, and blames his career path on the accidental capture of a butterfly in a crab net at the age of six. In 2008 he purchased for £20 from eBay an aphid is a piece of Baltic amber. This turned out to be an undescribed species which he wanted to be named Mindarus ebayi but the species’ author decided to name it Mindarus harringtoni. Richard feels it appropriate to have an old fossil named after him.
