Ultracentrifugation
A centrifuge is a device for separating particles from a solution. In molecular biology, particles are often large molecules. As the rotor spins, centrifugal force is applied to particles in the sample causing them to sediment at a rate which is proportional to the centrigugal force applied. Ultracentrifuges can apply centrifugal forces from 20,000 to 250,000 times
g. At a fixed centrifugal force and liquid viscosity, the rate of sedimentation is proportional to the molecular weight of the particles (molecules).
