Gilbert, Walter. Born 21 March 1932.


Walter Gilbert obtained a PhD in mathematics in 1957 and was a theoretical physicist at Harvard University before joining Jim Watson's group in 1960. His first important work concerned the identification of mRNA. He then worked subsequently on proteins, repressors, and performed experiments that led to the identification of the lactose repressor .

His most lasting contribution was the design of one of the two sequencing techniques that accelerated research on genes.
