What is the Molecular Biology Notebook?

The Molecular Biology Notebook on CD ROM brings you:
  1. Biolab: software that lets you explore the techniques used in molecular biology.
  2. Dr Chromo's school: Course material aimed at A level, covering the molecular biology part of the biology curriculum, and giving a summary of the basic biological concepts required to understand molecular biology.
  3. RESource: A browser designed to display the course material and which can also navigate to web pages over the Internet.

These components are provided on a single CD ROM which can be installed on a stand-alone PC, or on a school network. Access to the Internet, although an advantage, is not necessary.

Biolab: the simulation software

Biolab, is a virtual laboratory which lets you simulate molecular biology experiments on your computer.
From its Lab Bench, you can perform restriction enzyme digests, agarose gel electrophoresis, and Southern blots. Any DNA sequence, in a GCG format, can be used by Biolab. The number of experiments you can perform is only limited by your imagination! Eleven sample experiments are provided, with an easy to follow guide. But remember, you can input any desired DNA sequence!

Dr Chromo's school: the course

'A level' molecular biology course

Dr Chromo's school is a Molecular Biology course for A level students, with a difference. Clear images, animations, and simple language are used to make concepts of molecular biology easy to understand.
The material provided covers all molecular biology concepts needed for A level biology. It is not intended to provide full coverage of the A level biology curriculum. MBN helps students understand how molecular biology relates to biology in general and acts as a lynch pin for the concepts of RNA and DNA studies. Further material has been included which will take the keen student beyond the needs of A level, into the first year of a biology degree course.

RESource: the course browser

RESource is provided with MBN to display the course material. It is also a web browser.

RESource displays a list of topics, and for each topic, a list of pages, making for ease of navigation through the course.

RESource includes a search facility that will create a list of encyclopaedia pages found in a search. This list can be turned into an index for later reference. Individual pages can be bookmarked for future sessions.
