North Wyke Laboratory

North Wyke Laboratory provides an analytical chemistry service to Rothamsted Research, North Wyke, undertaking a range of analyses on materials of environmental, agricultural and biological origin. Quality is maintained by the use of internal quality control standards and by participation in an international proficiency testing scheme.

During September 2008 North Wyke laboratories underwent an extensive refurbishment of the laboratories, including the establishment of a larger microbiology facility in the former entomology laboratory and the conversion of the former electronics workshop into a stable isotope mass spectrometry laboratory.

These changes have allowed an expansion of existing research on the discharge of faecal indicator organisms into water courses and the microbiology of biogas generation as well as providing facilities for visiting research workers.

The re-siting of the stable isotope mass spectrometer next-door to the North Wyke automated soil incubation system opens up the challenging possibility of linking the two to provide unparalleled detailed information on fundamental soil processes.

North Wyke Library

North Wyke Library was established in its present form in the Manor House in 1992, incorporating the old Chapel and some of the more modern parts of the building (1904) joining the Chapel to the East Wing.

The Library currently subscribes to approximately 70 journals in the soil, ecological and environmental sciences, mostly in electronic format. These current issues are supported by back runs of print journals collected over the past century. There are also approximately 1700 specialised books covering all areas of the North Wyke research remit, as well as reports, theses, reference, maps and Soil Survey collections. All stock is catalogued and can be accessed via the library databases. Book and report stock can be borrowed for up to 6 weeks.

Many externally networked resources and databases, including Web of Knowledge and CAB Abstracts, are accessible via the North Wyke intranet. Two PC`s are available for general use in the library, together with a colour printer and scanner/photocopier. We operate a full inter-library loan service for obtaining items that are not held on site.

The library is open throughout the week from Monday-Friday, and has both working and reading areas.
