Rothamsted Research receives the Athena SWAN Bronze Award

There are 114 Athena SWAN members from higher education and research institutes

Rothamsted Research has received the Athena SWAN Bronze Award for its commitment to gender equality and support for women having their careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM).

The Athena SWAN Charter has been developed by the UK’s Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) to recognise the commitment to advancing the representation of women in STEMM areas in research and academic institutions. Rothamsted Research received the bronze award after detailed assessment of the current state of the Institute regarding gender equality.

Ms Karen Taylor, Acting Head of Human Resources at Rothamsted said: “The submission report gathered quantitative information on staff and students as well as qualitative data on policies, practices, systems and employment terms. The aim was to identify good practice, challenges and opportunities. As a result, Rothamsted Research proposed actions to promote organizational change to support a management culture to improve further our institute as a place to work, not only for women, but for all. This includes family-friendly policies, flexible working initiatives and career development strategies for both female and male staff.”

Prof Martin Parry, chair of the Rothamsted Athena SWAN self-assessment team said: “Rothamsted’s mission, to develop environmentally sustainable solutions for food and energy production, is fundamental to meeting some of the enormous challenges facing humanity today. We can only hope to meet these challenges and achieve these goals by using all the resources available to us, and not by ignoring around 30% of the available talent.”

A ceremony will be held at the University of Cambridge on Thursday 6 November where Rothamsted will be presented with the award.

Notes about the Athena SWAN Charter

Aiming to progress the representation of women in science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics (STEMM), the Athena SWAN Charter originated from work between the Athena Project and the Scientific Women’s Academic Network (SWAN). The Charter is supported by the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) and the UKRC.

Currently there are 114 Athena SWAN members from higher education institutions (HEI) and research institutes.

A recent study on the effectiveness and impact of the Athena SWAN Charter shows that institutional champions had positively impacted on gender issues, women’s career progression, opportunities for training, and fairness of workload, amongst other outcomes.

Rothamsted Research submits application to Defra for permission to carry out field trial with GM wheat plants

The trial will test whether GM wheat plants are able to carry out photosynthesis more efficiently in the field and whether this trait could result in a higher yielding crop. A public consultation has begun.
