EXploitation of Aphid Monitoring systems IN Europe

Data collection

A network of suction traps has been established to monitor aphids. The first trap began operating at Rothamsted, UK, in 1965. There are now 73 traps in 19 countries throughout Europe and Scandinavia. All traps are standardised on the Rothamsted design and operate at a height of 12.2 m. Each sample is representative of a wide area and the network is able to provide a comprehensive assessment of aphid populations throughout much of the Continent. This requires highly specialised taxonomic skills and collections which have been built up throughout the Continent over many years. The system has produced the largest, standardised, spatiotemporal database for any terrestrial invertebrate group anywhere in the world. As such it is a unique resource for studies on the impacts of global change, as it has the potential to be analysed in relation to other long term datasets such as those on climate, atmospheric composition, pollutants and land use.
