Summary of data and its usage

The Unit of Integrated Pest Management is working on research and development in plant protection in general and specifically on development of forecasting methods for pests and diseases of field crops, models for pests and diseases, development of risk assessments for pests and diseases, epidemiology, and crop loss assessments. The unit comprises 14 people including PhD-students (7 researchers). Some projects are related to forecasting insects on field crops and development of weather-driven models for virus diseases related to aphids as vectors. Suction traps are used for insects in some of the projects. The insects studied are aphids, frit flies and thrips. There are 9 suction traps in Sweden and the Unit assists with work in Latvia, where there are 2 traps and in Lithuania where there are also 2 traps. A database for aphids trapped in the suction traps has been made and it is possible for researchers from Latvia and Lituania to put in the data via Internet. A map of Scandinavian countries, Finland, Baltic countries, North-west Russia and northern Europe is now being made to show locations of suction traps and data from the database via Internet. These data will be made available to the EXAMINE project.

Research activities include epidemiology of virus diseases and development of forecasting methods for a range of pests and diseases of field crops, for example:

  • Virus epidemiology and seed potato production in Tunisia
  • Integrated Pest Management of important pests in South-Western Ethiopia
  • Forecasting and Warning Systems designed for plant protection in Latvia
  • Implementation and adaptation of Swedish forecasting and warning methods for plant protection in Lithuania
