Università Degli Studi di Catania (UNICT)
Personnel (click for email): Prof. Sebastiano Barbagallo DISTEF, section agricultural Entomology, of the University of Catania is composed of 11 scientists (3 full professors, 5 associate professors, 3 researchers), 6 technicians and 8 graduate students. The section is involved in several teaching and research activities in various fields of agricultural entomology, such as biology, ecology and sustainable strategies for pest control on major fruit groves, vegetables (especially in greenhouses), ornamental plants and forestry. Biological and systematic aspects of Homoptera Sternorrhyncha (a group including most important crop pests, such as aphids, whiteflies, jumping plant-lice and scale insects) are particularly stressed. The research team has co-operated in the recent past in several projects of national and international interest, some of which are financially supported by the EU. These include a FOCUS project on "New ecological pest management of pernicious scale insects in Mediterranean forests and groves". The research team has also a qualified representative in EU concerted actions, such as the current EWSN (European Whitefly Studies Network).
