Broom's Barn is the UK's national centre for sugar beet research, located 20 miles east of Cambridge. Research spans a range of crops and scientific disciplines and includes liaison/extension work with growers and the industry. Specialist extension staff provide a two-way dialogue of advisory information with growers and their technical advisers.
Mission
Our mission is to carry out high quality strategic and applied research for the benefit of UK arable farmers, Our role includes interacting with and acting as a link between the arable industry and the national and international biological sciences community.
Facilities
The purpose-built facilities at Broom's Barn include laboratories for molecular biology and micro-propagation virology, microbiology and plant physiology as well as glasshouse and controlled-environment rooms. There is a 120 ha experimental farm with irrigation and plot covering tunnels for drought tolerance experiments. There are specialist facilities for field studies of pests and diseases.
