Broom's Barn Applied Crop Sciences
Vacancies at Broom's Barn
Post Doctoral Research Scientist
Broom's Barn Research Centre, near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, carries out field and laboratory research on a range of arable crops including sugar beet, wheat, barley and oilseed rape. This includes work on drought tolerance, pest and disease control, weed control, crop physiology and biotechnology.
A vacancy exists for a molecular geneticist/plant pathologist is required for a three year BBSRC-LINK funded project to characterise a genetic region that conditions resistance to a range of sugar beet diseases.
The aim of the project is to characterise the region of Beta vulgaris chromosome IV involved in resistance to diverse pathogens, in terms of its structure, its interaction with secondary genetic loci and its ability to control disease in the field. It is expected that the information and materials generated within the project will be used for marker assisted selection by the sugar beet industry and for future map-based cloning of the resistance gene(s).
Candidates should have a PhD in plant molecular biology and an interest in breeding, genetics and plant pathology. Some experience in undertaking glasshouse and field trials would be advantageous.
