Pesticide Chemistry

Pesticide contamination of surface water

Pesticides reach surface waters such as rivers via drainage, spray drift and improper disposal of washings and containers. Dissipation of this contamination occurs by sorption to sediment and ultimately by degradation, with some potentially damaging uptake also by aquatic organisms. A current project is examining the roles of formulation and the physicochemical properties of pesticides in determining behaviour in sediment/water systems.
