Careers » University Links

The Institute is very much an established part of the UK Science Base and has working links with over 50 UK universities and other higher education centres. Various activities endorse and develop these links; they include joint research programmes, training placements, lecturing and seminars.

Since 1990, Rothamsted has been formally linked with the University of Nottingham. This recognises the complementary interests of the two institutions in many areas of biological, agricultural and environmental research, and seeks to draw them closer together to give synergy and added value to each partner. Over the years more than 25 Rothamsted staff have been 'Special Lecturers' and 'Special Professors' in various departments at Nottingham, more than 80 PhDs have been registered at Nottingham and jointly supervised by Rothamsted and Nottingham staff and there have been more than 80 joint publications in refereed journals. Recently a new Memorandum of Understanding has been established to encourage further collaborations and joint funding applications.

Brooms' Barn has its own close research and teaching ties with the University of East Anglia at Norwich.

Rothamsted also has a formal link with the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Reading. Several members of Rothamsted staff have honorary academic status at Reading, and each year there are either one or two PhD studentships funded jointly by Reading and the Lawes Trust (which owns and administers the Rothamsted Estate). In recent years the major areas of scientific collaboration have been agro-ecology, crop genetics, insecticide resistance, nematology, epidemiology of plant pathogens and theoretical population genetics.
