Students undertaking postgraduate work at Rothamsted Research (RRes) will be registered with an appropriate university and have an academic supervisor as well as one or more at RRes. Consequently, students have access to training courses and other facilities provided by the university as well as at RRes. Most of these studentships are based at Rothamsted, though students also visit their university of registration and may carry out part of their project there. While projects may be funded for three or four years (and the duration is driven by the science), all full time PhDs must be submitted within four years of the start. The available studentships consist of:
BBSRC Quota Studentships
These are our 'standard' studentships which are funded by BBSRC through a Doctoral Training Grant (DTG) administered by Rothamsted Research (RRes). They attract the BBSRC stipend (£12940 p.a. for 2009/2010) which is paid to students by RRes, RRes also pay the university registration fees. There is a nominal sum available for research consumables and travel / conference attendance.
BBSRC CASE Studentships (Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering)
These are also funded by BBSRC through a Doctoral Training Grant (DTG) administered by Rothamsted Research (RRes). There are many similarities with Quota studentships, the key difference being that each project is associated with an industrial sponsor. The sponsor funds a supplementary stipend of £2500 p.a. (also usually paid through RRes) and provides some further supervision and support for the project. They may also require reports from students on their progress. Many CASE studentships are funded by the industrial sponsor for three years but an increasing number are now for four years.
BBSRC Industrial CASE Studentships
These are essential similar to the BBSRC CASE studentships described above but are awarded to the company rather than the academic partner. The industrial partner then selects an appropriate academic partner and agrees a project. They are therefore administered slightly differently.
Lawes Agricultural Trust Studentships
These studentships are funded jointly by The Lawes Agricultural Trust (which administers the RRes estate) and the Universities of Reading or Nottingham. They have been established to promote scientific collaboration between these organisations and are focused on areas of mutual strategic importance. Depending on the nature of the work, the student is based primarily at the university or at RRes, but opportunities to spend time working in both locations are strongly encouraged and supported. The host location administers the project under the same terms as a Research Council studentship.
Other BBSRC studentships
Other sorts of studentship will be detailed when these are available. In the past these have included Targeted priority Studentships or Dorothy Hodgkins studentships.
