Rothamsted Research
Rothamsted is able to provide some accommodation for students and visiting workers either on-site or close by. This is mainly at Rothamsted's historic Grade 1-listed Manor House, the former home of the Lawes' family, which can accommodate up to 48 visiting scientists. A limited number of one-bedroomed and family flats are also available on the estate and in Harpenden. For further information and to apply for accommodation, please contact Leona Pollock (leona.pollock@bbsrc.ac.uk).
The residences provide breakfasts and evening meals or offer self-catering
facilities. Staff restaurants at Rothamsted Research provide lunches and a
range of refreshments during the working week.
Rothamsted Research is located in Harpenden, about 25 miles north of London
near the attractive Cathedral City of St Albans. Harpenden is a pleasant small
town (population about 30,000) that is well connected by road and rail to
London (30 minutes) and its surrounding counties. Four international airports
are readily accessible from Harpenden.
Broom's Barn
Broom's Barn occupies a more rural setting in East Anglia. This is the main
arable farming area of the UK and one of the main UK sugar-beet growing areas.
Cambridge and Norwich with their well established universities are both easily
accessible by road and London is 90 minutes by rail from nearby Bury St Edmunds.
North Wyke
North Wyke Cottages are situated on the Research Station and provide a cheap basic form of accommodation in the form of four cottages, each housing a maximum of two people (possibly of mixed sex) with shared facilities. There is no telephone, but a television and well equipped kitchen is provided. Residents are responsible for cleaning the houses. Currently they cost in the region of 50 pounds per week to rent and this covers all bills. While convenient for work, they are very remote, and as described below, a good distance from the nearest shops.
A range of accommodation exists in Okehampton and North Tawton, Okehampton usually being preferred due to its greater range of facilities. Prices vary, but generally are more than the North Wyke Cottages, perhaps in the region of 60-70 pounds per week. However, you do have easy access to supermarkets, shops, pubs, a cinema, a sports centre and all the other things you would associate with a small town. Realistically a car is required to travel from Okehampton to North Wyke, although cycling is a possibility. Usually it is possible to arrange to share a lift with others, but this cannot always be relied upon.
