We are an international research community and recognise the importance of providing a friendly, supportive environment, particularly for those who find themselves in a totally new culture. We want you to feel at home. Rothamsted sites offer staff support services to anyone experiencing personal difficulties or work-related problems. At Rothamsted, there is a Postgraduate Association and an International Staff and Students Association welcomes new arrivals, provides information and arranges a range of social activities - barbecues, dances, visits etc.

Sports and Social Activities

The sites offer a lively social environment. They also have their own tennis and badminton courts. A full range of activities is arranged, some on an individual basis, others on an inter-departmental basis. A small fitness centre is available on site at Rothamsted.

Support for families

We recognise the importance of work-life balance and in line with our family-friendly policy endeavour to ensure that official institute meetings are accommodated within the core time periods of 10.00 to 13.00 and 14.00 to 16.00. This allows staff to accommodate more easily their responsibilities for family care arrangements alongside essential components of the professional working day.

We also have the Rothamsted Little Stars Nursery on site (run by Bright Horizons Ltd), this caters for children from 3 months to primary school age and was rated as 'outstanding' in the 2010 Ofsted inspection. This is open to both staff and members of the local community, Rothamsted staff benefit from preferential rates. Similarly there is a play scheme which operates during school holidays while there are sufficient participants to cover the costs of running the scheme; this is also open to members of the local community.
